too late too late

in high school i used to wear a ponytail,
be grateful i don't have long hair anymore!
it was for breaking rules, but that was dumb and foolish.
it had all been done before

by my brother, he taught me all that i know.
but did he know i stole his haircut and his clothes?

too late to give it back!

when i was the only boy at all-girl shows,
conspicuous in lipstick and red nails,
stuck out like a hairy pink sore man-thumb --
not quite as dumb as me with a ponytail.

my mother, she taught me no-one's a piece of meat,
but did she know i stole her guitar and her poetry?

too late to give it back!
too late, too late.

i've never been a good student
i'm always learning lessons some wrong way
i'm bad grades and lots of bad excuses.

at least i know my own self, i taught me every song i play,
but did i know i stole everything that i say?

too late to give it back!
