shirley

i once knew an iguana named Shirley
whose facial expression was just closed eyes.
i got tail-whipped once and that was sure angry,
but everything else was just asleep or surprised.

here's what i'm thinking about today,
in my cage staring at the ceiling.
leave me alone, you know I'll be OK
i'm so cold-blooded with no feelings.

lady, you open me like a book
don't know what you read under my covers.
maybe every chapter's just the same damn page,
or else every page is just the same word.

here's what it sounds like now in my head.
here's what surrounds me when i'm alone.
here's what i found to talk about instead,
i'm inside out, all i am is muscles brains and bones.
